Abstract

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis is a disorder of the nose due to exposure to allergens that cause an IgE-mediated inflammatory process. The signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis are: nasal congestion, sneezing and rhinorrhea. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis are exacerbated when living at air temperatures ranging from 23-25 0C with 75% relative humidity. The use of air conditioners that make the air conditions cold and dry (cold dry air) can trigger allergic rhinitis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between the use of air conditioners with the incidence of allergic rhinitis in the ENT-KL polyclinic, Meuraxa Banda Aceh general hospital. The design in this study used a cross-sectional design with a sample of 80 respondents. The subjects of this study were respondents who had air conditioners and complained of nasal congestion, sneezing and rhinorrhea. Data were analyzed by chi-square test. Allergic rhinitis was 44 people (55%) and 36 people did not suffer from allergic rhinitis. Patients with allergic rhinitis were more likely to use the air conditioner at 19-24˚C (56.25%) compared to 25-30˚C (43.75%). Bivariate analysis shows there is a relationship between the two variables. Chi square test results There is a relationship between the temperature of the use of air conditioners with the incidence of allergic rhinitis at the Meuraxa Regional General Hospital Banda Aceh with a value of p = 0.005 (p < 0.05). While the length of time using the air conditioner, the chi square test showed that p = 0.159 (p>0.05) did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of allergic rhinitis
