Abstract

Abstract: Low back pain (LBP) is a clinical syndrome with pain manifestation and discomforts in the back
area of the body especially in the border of costae 12 to the glutea fold accompanying leg pain. The
prevalence of LBP in United State is around 15-20% each year. However, the number of low back pain in
Indonesia is still unknown. The factors such as age, sex, body mass index and mechanical load are the main
factors that cause low back pain cases. The research from various countries suggests that the bag weight
should not exceed 10% of the body mass. This study used an analytical method by incorporating the crosssectional
approach.

which consisted of 55 respondents. This study used Roland Morris disability questionnaire that
has been translated into Bahasa Indonesia. The data from the questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS
with Chi-Square test. The results showed that the prevalence of LBP in SMAN 2 students was 56,4%.
Bivariate analysis found that there is no relationship between age (p = 0,030), sex (p = 0,542) and body
mass index (p = 0,377) with the incidence of LBP. Therefore, this study reveals that there is a relationship
of using a backpack (p = 0,033) and bag weight (p = 0,030) with the incidence of LBP amongst the
students of SMAN 2 Meulaboh.
