Abstract

Abstract: Aerobic exercise is popular, especially among women since it is able to decrease the risks caused by low level of hemoglobin. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of low and medium intensity aerobic exercise on hemoglobin levels. The samples were chosen randomly and the design of randomized pretest-posttest with control group was employed in this research. A number of 30 medical students aged 18-20 at Abulyatama University batch 2016 were divided into three groups, namely control group, low-intensity aerobic group, and medium-intensity aerobic group. Aerobic exercise was done by pedalling a stationary bike with load of 59%HRMAX for low-intensity aerobic group and 79%HRMAX for medium-intensity aerobic group. The results of checking hemoglobin levels in pretest and posttest were analyzed by using descriptive method and inferential with normality test, paired samples t-test, and significance level of p ≥0.05. The results of paired samples t-test showed that (1) there was no significant correlation between hemoglobin levels of control group in pretest and those in posttest (p=0.79), (2) there was a significant correlation between hemoglobin levels of low-intensity aerobic group in pretest and those in posttest (p-0.00), and (3) there was a significant correlation between hemoglobin levels of medium-intensity aerobic group in pretest and those in posttest (p-0.00). Hence, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between hemoglobin levels and aerobic exercise with low and medium intensity (p-0.00).
