Abstract

Abstract: Stress is the physical, psychologcal, emotional, and mental strain which might trigger the occurence of gastritis since it causes reduced blood flow to the gastric mucosa in the walls of the stomach and increases the permeability of the walls of the stomach. Stress negatively affects neuroendocrine mechanism as well as the digestive system and usually leads to the gastritis. The aim of this research was to identify the correlation between stress and gastritis reccurence in nursing students studying in Medicine Faculty of Abulyatama University, Aceh Besar Regency. Cross-sectional study approach with stress and the reccurence of gastritis as the independent and dependent variables was employed in this research. A number of 62 students who were experiencing gastritis were chosen as the research samples by using total sampling technique. The research was conducted from March 13 to March 17, 2018. The data distribution showed that there were 19 students (30.6%) with low level of stress, 29 students (46.8%) with moderate level of stress, and 14 students (22.6%) with high level of stress. In addition, there were 37 students (59.7%) experiencing no reccurence of gastritis and 25 students (40.3%) experiencing no reccurence of gastritis. Those data were then analyzed by using chi-square test and identifying the differences between the average scores. It was also found that there were 15 students (51.7%) with moderate level of stress that experienced no reccurence of gastritis while 14 students (48.3%) with moderate level of stress that experienced the reccurence of gastritis. Therefore, from the results of the statistical tests, it could be concluded that there was a correlation between stress and gastritis reccurence in nursing students studying in Medicine Faculty of Abulyatama University in Aceh Besar Regency (p=0.048<0.05).
