Abstract

There  are many factors which affect the success of teaching  English at elementary school.  One of the determining factors is the teacher. A qualitative-descriptive research was conducted in in elementary school in Banda Aceh, complimented by qualitative data analysis to study classroom interactions in Banda Aceh in 2013. Based on the data analysis, the conclusionsare as follows. (1) the teacher’s knowledge on meaningful communicative approach had been classified as poor. (2)  The teachers’ ability and knowledge on how to teach English to children had also been poor, (3) the teaching learning processdid not activate pupils optimally. It is suggested that the teachers’ ability in learning-teaching process be improved by in-service training on the teaching of English to elementary school pupils.  It is also necessary to provide teaching media and the increase of supervision by the school  principal.
