Abstract

Bay leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids and essential oils. The active compounds found in bay leaves have antibacterial properties. One of the causes of diarrhea is Escherichia coli. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of bay leaf extract (Syzygium Polyanthum) in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria and to determine the concentration of bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum) which had strong potential. This study used a laboratory experiment that used samples of bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum) with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% using the diffusion method. The results of this study indicate that the diameter of the inhibition zone for Escherichia coli at a concentration of 25% bay leaf extract with a clear zone diameter of 9.8 mm, which has an inhibition zone for the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria is in the medium category, 50% concentration of bay leaf extract with a clear zone diameter of 15, 2 mm, which has an inhibition zone for the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria, including the strong category, a concentration of 75% bay leaf extract with a clear zone diameter of 19.2 mm, which has an inhibition zone for the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria including the strong category and a concentration of 100% bay leaf extract with a clear zone diameter. 21.6 mm which has an inhibition zone for the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria including the very strong category. These results indicate that there are significant differences in each concentration of bay leaf extract. It is hoped that the community can take advantage of bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) which are used as alternative medicines for Escherichia coli bacterial infections.
