Abstract


The ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can have adverse effects on human skin, such as erythema, edema, photocarcinogenesis, and even skin cancer. Currently, there are many commercial sunscreen products with synthetic chemical active ingredients that can cause side effects and may even enter the bloodstream. To address this issue, it is necessary to develop natural-based sunscreens. The objective of this research is to determine the sunscreen activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of a combination of Clitoria ternatea and Aloe vera extracts in vitro using spectrophotometry UV-Vis. Sunscreen activity testing was conducted by measuring the sample's absorbance at a wavelength of 290 – 320 nm (UV B region) at a concentration of 1000 ppm. The extract combinations used included TB12 (C. ternatea: A. vera 1:2), TB11 (1:1), and TB21 (2:1). The absorbance values obtained were then used to calculate their SPF values using the Mansur equation. The combination extract of C. ternatea: A. vera exhibited sunscreen activity with the highest SPF value of 14.76 for sample TB21, which is classified as maximum protection. This indicates that the combination extract of butterfly pea flower and aloe vera has the potential to be developed into an active sunscreen ingredient.
