Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Group Investigation (GI) learning model in improving students’ self-concept compared to conventional learning models. A positive self-concept is an important factor in students’ academic and social success; however, many students still have low self-concept due to passive learning. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. This research was conducted at one of the MTsN in the city of Banda Aceh. The sample consisted of 54 eighth-grade students, divided into an experimental group (n=28) that received GI instruction and a control group (n=26) that received conventional instruction. The research instrument used was a validated Self-Concept scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The results showed a significant difference in the improvement of self-concept between the experimental and control groups (p = 0.000 < 0.05). The mean gain score of the experimental group (0.35) was higher than that of the control group (0.14). In conclusion, the Group Investigation learning model is proven to be more effective in improving students’ self-concept compared to conventional learning.
