Abstract


Carbide waste is one of the waste generated from the disposal of the remnants of the process of connecting metal to metal (welding) using carbide gas. One of the uses of this carbide waste is as a mixed material for making lightweight bricks. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of light bricks produced on density, compressive strength and water absorption. The method used in this study refers to the experimental method, which is making lightweight bricks using carbide waste as a mixed material and cured for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The test results obtained, lightweight bricks using carbide waste has a density value of 800 - 1200 Kg / m3, lighter than bricks that use ordinary sand as a mixture of material that is 1500-2000 Kg / m3. The value of compressive strength of lightweight bricks using carbide waste with a variation of 0-15%, namely 2.06 MPa, 2.33 MPa, 1.13 MPa and 0.96 MPa. The compressive strength test shows that the more the percentage of carbide waste used, the lower the compressive strength of the lightweight brick. The average value of water absorption in light bricks using carbide waste ranged from 21.38 - 31.11%. Based on the results of these tests it can be concluded that carbide waste can be used as one of the mixed materials for making lightweight bricks.
